Originally my father’s hunting knife, this blade was purchased in the 1950s or 1960s. Somewhere along the way, the antler grip was broken. The knife hung in my father’s workshop for decades until it finally came to me. I let it sit in a desk drawer for a couple more decades until I decided to take up the craft of knife making.
The full-tang, stainless steel blade was in pretty good shape, although it needed some cleanup and polishing. The pommel also needed some cleanup. everything in between needed to be replaced. The grip was the hardest part. It was a four-piece, six-pin construction with G10 spacers to match the thickness of the tang and Micarta scales to give it a nice pattern. I also fabricated the cross-spacers at the grip and pommel from thin G10 material.
So, I set to work and came up with what is now an heirloom custom hunting knife that will be my personal blade whenever I need one.
The sheath is also a custom piece and my first attempt at a folded sheath with integrated belt loops at the mid-point.
