A Stance on Freedom

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I wanted to start a discussion on a quote that will probably end up in one of my books… I’m thinking the Jake Lasater series.  What do you think of this:

“If you aren’t prepared to die for your freedom and equally prepared to kill for it, I’m not so sure you deserve that freedom.”

What are your thoughts on that one?  And be honest.

  1. Not copping out, but it depends on the context. It’s a very strong quote up until “I’m not so sure…” Better: “You don’t deserve that freedom.” Love your writing, and look forward to reading more!

I agree! Too many people choose to be victims when all it takes to stop being victimized is the ability to stand up and fight for what you want and need. Can’t tell you how many times I arrest the same asshole for beating his wife just because she doesn’t have the cajones to stand up for herself and say, “ENOUGH!” Freedom is a priviledge not a right and people forget that. The only victims in my book are animals and children..I could go on and on but I won’t. Good quote…Stand up and fight for what you want, don’t be so accepting! That includes everything in life.

  3. The negatives throw me. They may be valid if the character talks in this manner throughout. In poetry, I distill information so my tweaks below may come out too “Yoda” and may lose the characterization.

“If you aren’t prepared to die for your freedom
and equally prepared to kill for it,
    I’m not so sure
    you deserve that freedom.”

=> for freedom, be ready for death to earn it.
=> for freedom, be ready with the price of death, received or delivered.
=> for freedom, be ready to accept the price of death, received or delivered.

=> for freedom, the unconditional price is death, received or delivered.
