I am very pleased to announce, at long last, the second short story in the Shadowgate Tales short fiction project produced by Heads & Tails Publishing. It’s titled “The Company You Keep” by Lou J. Berger and is an origination tale for Skeeter, Jake Lasater’s girl genius ward in my Blood War Chronicles series.
What’s it about?
“When Skeeter’s parents are brutally murdered, she is sold to Hurley, a vicious conman, to pay off her family debts. This disreputable gentleman, operating in Civil War-era Chicago, enlists a motley crew of children to fleece honest folks of their money. Hurley uses Skeeter’s tinkering talents to enhance his profits, and her mechanical marvels are the envy of his shady retinue. Skeeter, dreaming of bigger things, is quickly outgrowing Hurley’s iron-fisted control. Will she be able to escape Hurley’s clutches, and flee west, before it’s too late? “
The first story in this series, “River of Betrayal” by JD Bowman, was very well received and made for a great start to the project. As part of this endeavor, Heads & Tails Publishing will be producing a total of six short stories, with the last slot filled by yours truly.

The whole team is very excited to see these stories coming out, and we hope you all enjoy reading them as much as the authors did writing them. It’s been a ton of fun for me, and I’m excited to hear what you think about each one.
